Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cuthbert, Georgia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available in every city across the nation equipped to perform this service. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, with body hair being an alternative in many cases. Tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

More recently, the approach to drug testing has progressively included hair follicle assessments. Hair drug testing is being required more frequently by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts instead of the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases often favor hair follicle testing. A major advantage is the extended detection window, which can span up to 90 days, is done under observation, and is very hard to manipulate. Yet, for detecting very recent usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the definitive choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers within the expanding hair strand fibers. When harvested near the scalp, hair can deliver up to an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. We advocate for measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's database. This involves confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set up for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is exceptionally challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not solely short-term use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests," the evaluation examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cuthbert, GA, hair follicle testing is advantageous over traditional urine tests for several reasons. Its ability to detect drug use over a longer period makes it more reliable in indicating substance abuse patterns. Unlike urine tests, it is harder to manipulate hair tests, thus providing more accurate results.

Hair testing offers enhanced detection accuracy. With its extended detection window, it delivers a broader overview, proving essential for employers enforcing strict drug-free environments. Confidence in these results outstrips the convenience of urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Offering a detection period of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Cuthbert, GA, emerges as a superior choice. This extended window allows employers a comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug history, distancing itself from the limitations of other methods.

The broad detection span ensures a clear picture of an applicant or employee's substance use. Employers find this invaluable when assessing candidates, ensuring a drug-free workplace and informed hiring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Cuthbert, GA, hair follicle tests are considered highly tamper-resistant, advancing reliability of test results. The probability of sample adulteration is starkly reduced, providing trustworthy and undeniable outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
