In Cairo, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is supported by facilities across the nation that can conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is needed. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of the testing process. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. They serve companies with strict anti-drug policies, the legal system, and those under probation, offering extended detection of drug use up to 90 days. This severely limits test tampering. Yet, urine tests remain the best for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair analysis can reveal up to a three-month timeframe for drug and alcohol detection. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that isn’t handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for potential drug use. Although it is an economical way to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result in the screen must be verified for legal acceptance. Any samples indicating a positive result in Screening will require further validation.

For samples that show a positive indication during Screening, more hair is sampled from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, the drugs are extracted from the hair at lower concentrations than with other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked as presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab processing sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for a duration reaching 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test proves exceedingly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insight into a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There is a delay of approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing testing methods in Cairo, GA, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests. The remarkable detection accuracy and reliability it provides are unmatched. While urine tests may serve short-term detection needs, hair follicle tests offer a broader understanding of a person's substance use over time, proving superior when evaluating ongoing employee compliance with drug-free policies.

The durability of results from hair follicle testing ensures that attempts to circumvent detection are minimized. Employers benefit significantly from the extended period these tests cover, making them an optimal choice in regions like Cairo, GA, where maintaining both compliance and integrity is of utmost importance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
