Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Buford, Georgia. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, offering facilities nationwide capable of performing such tests. Ideally, the hair length needed is 1.5 to 2 inches from the head's crown or other body locations. Analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or additional tailored hair testing selections.

Recently, the use of hair follicle testing in drug assessments has grown in popularity. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair analyses over the conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals predominantly use these tests. What sets hair follicle testing apart is its extended detection capability, offering almost 90 days coverage, with minimal room for manipulation. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective way to spot drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a comprehensive historical view by capturing biomarkers within hair fibers as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair provides a detection window for alcohol and drugs spanning up to around 90 days. It is straightforward to gather, a challenge to tamper with, and simple to mail.

For an ideal screening and confirmation sample, a 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair. In cases involving EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair is an option. “Head hair” refers specifically to scalp hair, while “body hair” includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes involved in achieving a drug test result include four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the sample's initial intake into a laboratory's system. This part is about checking the sample's seal and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entries absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift drug of abuse check. Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to negate drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Presumptive positives found during Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Upon a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, further hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other test types (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology.

Any Screening positive is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo a wash before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterium and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Wide detection period: Hair tests capture drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower range.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It's notably hard to alter a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical patterns: It shows drug use patterns over a time span, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair appears after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite quantities in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", what’s actually analyzed is the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
