Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Boston, Georgia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with facilities located in every city across the nation ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for testing. Hair analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more favored method for drug examinations. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair testing over the conventional urine tests. Businesses with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation utilize hair follicle tests. A primary advantage of this test is its extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use over a 90-day period, performed under strict observation, and resistant to manipulation. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still provide higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the growing hair shaft's fibers, hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a three-month observation period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, challenging to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair be unattainable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair only, while body hair refers to all other hair categories (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes preliminary handling within a laboratory’s framework. The process encompasses confirming that the sample is correctly sealed and sent, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for prohibited substances. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug use in the majority of samples, any positive outcome must be validated for legal acceptance. Samples reportedly positive in Screening require further Confirmation.

If Signs of positivity emerge in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (such as urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive outcome is executed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with the limited detection span of urine tests.
  • Resistance to fraud: Hair drug examinations are hard to manipulate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data provision: It delivers a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not merely current use.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect immediate use: Detection in hair requires a timeframe of approximately 5-7 days following usage.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug examinations incur higher costs compared to alternate testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair tint and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although often termed “hair follicle tests”, the analysis is conducted on the hair shaft and does not involve the scalp-inserted hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
