In Athens, Georgia, complete hair follicle drug testing is provided by Accredited Drug Testing. Our expertise in hair testing extends across Nationwide centers ready to execute hair and alcohol testing. Typically, the hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is needed for analysis. Our versatile tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has surged due to its preference over urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Those with zero-tolerance drug policies are increasingly relying on it due to its 90-day detection span, assured collection manner, and resistance to manipulation, though urine tests are more pertinent for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair allows for the preservation of a lengthy record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft. When clipped close to the scalp, hair presents an approximately three-month observation timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, reasonably tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 strands (analogous to the dimensions of a #2 pencil) and situated nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, a suitable quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or panels beyond 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen within a laboratory's setup. This phase confirms that the specimen is securely sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any remaining data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in the bulk of specimens, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Specimens that return a presumptively positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where Screening produces a presumptively positive result, additional hair is collected from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods are employed to confirm any positive screening results. Any presumptively positive specimens are washed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine screenings which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Cheating resistance: Circumventing a hair drug screening is notably challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It provides an overview of drug use trends over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delay in detection: Drugs may take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug screenings generally incur greater expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Results variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair shaft rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Athens, GA outshines traditional urine tests in various aspects. One major advantage is its extended detection period that captures a comprehensive history of substance use, up to 90 days. Unlike the shorter detection limits of urine tests, hair analysis gives a broader insight into an individual's habits, which is invaluable for employers aiming to maintain a drug-free environment.

Moreover, hair testing's accuracy surpasses that of urine analysis due to its resistance to false positives and sample manipulation. For entities and individuals prioritizing accuracy and reliability, hair follicle tests eliminate doubts, offering trustworthy data that facilitate compliance and informed decision-making in policy enforcement.

Extended Detection Window

In Athens, GA, hair follicle tests are renowned for their extensive detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive timeframe provides unmatched insights into an individual's substance history, offering employers and other interested parties a far-reaching view of behavior that surpasses the limitations of other testing methods.

Such prolonged detection capability helps in making informed decisions based on an employee's or applicant's long-term behavior rather than short-term activities. Employing this method ensures organizations gain a deeper understanding of substance use history, allowing for better assessments and ensuring the integrity of their workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Athens, GA are recognized for their resistance to tampering, ensuring high integrity and validity of results. This testing method makes it nearly impossible for subjects to alter or adulterate their samples, thus providing a reliable measure of substance use without the vulnerabilities of other testing types.

The procedural strength of hair analysis in curbing sample tampering ensures that results remain consistent and unquestionable. This tamper-resistant approach benefits employers and authorities seeking assured, accurate outcomes, which reinforces trust in the findings and supports decision-making processes accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
