Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments throughout Apalachee, Georgia. For those needing a hair-based examination for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in this area with testing sites available across numerous cities nationwide, equipped to administer hair tests. Hair measuring between 1.5 to 2 inches on the head is typically needed, though body hair may be an alternative. The analysis can adapt to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing options.

Lately, the inclusion of hair follicle drug evaluations has grown in popularity among testing methods. An increasing number of businesses, legal entities, and addiction counselors prefer hair drug analysis over traditional urine tests. This approach suits employers with strict drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. Its benefit lies in an extensive detection timeline of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and challenging to falsify, although urine tests remain pertinent for recent drug usage detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-term indicators of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug intake over a span of nearly 3 months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, making it ideal for both screening and confirmation. For further analysis, such as EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equal quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test in a lab involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any extra data input beyond what an electronic chain-of-custody system provides.

Screening serves as an initial examination for substance abuse. Despite being an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening outcome needs confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples testing positive during Screening must undergo additional verification.

In the event of a positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests particularly challenging to conduct.

Verification of a positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug examinations can identify substance intake for as long as 90 days, unlike urine checks with shorter detection spans.
  • Cheating deterrent: It is notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Traces history: Allows for identifying substance use trends over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs need about 5-7 days to appear detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Outcomes variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Apalachee, GA centers on the enhanced detection capability of hair tests. While traditional urine tests may suffice, they lack the superior accuracy and reliability delivered by hair testing. Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Apalachee, GA is a standout feature of hair follicle testing. Unlike other testing methods, hair analysis covers a detection period extending up to 90 days. This allows employers to review an individual's long-term substance use, delivering crucial data that supports informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
