Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Americus, Georgia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available Nationwide, equipped to handle hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction as a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often favor it over the urine test. Preferred by entities with stringent drug policies, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window up to 90 days and is nearly cheat-proof. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests excel in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing has shifted to recognize it as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strand's fibers during growth. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, extensions, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale for accurate specimen weighing. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, while body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab processing of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial steps to integrate a sample into a lab's system. This process includes confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment for common drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in many cases, a positive Screening must be validated for court acceptance. Any samples indicating preliminary positivity in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used for the Confirmation of any positive screening results. Prior to confirmation, any samples with presumptive positivity are cleaned as required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection time.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, greatly enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
