Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in The Villages, Florida. Should you require a hair or alcohol drug test, our expertise in hair testing covers numerous testing centers across cities nationwide, ready to perform your test. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized options.

Lately, methods of drug testing increasingly involve hair follicle testing. Industries, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation find the extensive detection window of hair tests, often extending to 90 days, gathered through observed collection, nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly three-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample composed of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, considered the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair are exclusive to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. It entails confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective means to discount drug use for most samples, any positive results must be confirmed for them to hold up in court. Samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test potentially positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and set up for Extraction. In this step, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Positive Screening confirmations are handled through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hindrance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a trend of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and unique hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the scalp’s hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In The Villages, FL, hair follicle testing stands out against urine tests. Hair tests offer increased detection accuracy and are less susceptible to adulteration compared to urine tests. Hair testing's extended detection timeframe makes it ideal for workplaces enforcing stringent drug policies. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
