Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sunrise, Florida. Whether you’re in need of a drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing ensures accurate results, with testing centers available across the nation. Generally, hair from the head or body measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has grown as a method for substance detection. A variety of entities including employers, courts, and substance misuse professionals are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judiciary bodies, and probation services. The extended detection span, typically reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, renders hair tests nearly tamper-proof. For drug detection within a 5-day window, urine analysis remains the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by securing biological markers within the fibers of the hair strands as they grow. When gathered at the scalp's base, hair can offer about a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and it's easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for initial testing and verification. For extended tests like EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for measuring the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes other varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of drug tests encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's database, confirming correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any extra data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in many samples, a positive outcome must be verified for legal proceedings. Samples that are initially positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is retrieved from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves withdrawing drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), thus rendering hair drug testing the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Before Confirmation, all samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed as necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have a more limited detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It can show a trend of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Generally, it takes around 5-7 days before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other methodologies.
  • Variance in results: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", these audits examine the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
