Accredited Drug Testing offers exhaustive hair follicle drug testing services in St. Lucie, Florida. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities throughout all cities in the Nation that can conduct these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head, though body hair may be used in many instances. Analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

In recent times, the method for conducting drug tests increasingly involves hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now often request hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle drug tests are the preferred choice for employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as by courts and probations. The key advantage is a significantly extended detection period, up to 90 days, gathered through an observed process, making it virtually tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected near the root, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and ensures easy transportation.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for initial analysis and verification. For EtG, additional markers, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, equivalent body hair can be utilized. Our reference to head hair solely pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug testing sample are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the first stage of processing a sample into the laboratory's database. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be affirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any specimens identified as presumptively positive during Screening need further verification.

If a specimen tests as presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive Screening outcome is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is checked under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring results are more reliable.
  • Yields historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug utilization over time, not just the most recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs are detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
