In Sarasota, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Should you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty includes hair testing, with facilities spread across all cities nationwide for your convenience. Generally, the use of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Of late, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening, gaining traction among employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse experts who opt for hair over urine tests. Ideal for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, or for legal and probationary requirements, this method's key advantage lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected in a direct supervision process, making cheating nearly impractical. Nevertheless, urine tests remain unsurpassed for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized for its efficacy, hair testing is utilized for detecting substances like drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of hair strands as they grow, hair offers a prolonged timeline for tracking drug and alcohol consumption. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use over an approximately three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands—about the width of a #2 pencil—nearest to the scalp provides an ideal 100mg sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or ones involving more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When we reference head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

In the laboratory, drug test processing encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within the lab's system, verifying proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and filling out any additional data needed that isn’t provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for drug misuse. This cost-effective method helps dismiss drug use in many samples; however, any positive findings need verification for legal validity. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing more intricate.

To confirm any preliminary positive results, analysis is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days compared to the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, resulting in highly reliable outcomes.
  • Long-term usage patterns: Provide insight into an individual's drug use history over time, capturing more than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Compared to other testing methods, hair drug tests are generally costlier.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
