Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair sample drug assessments in Quincy, Florida. When you require a hair or alcohol screening, they specialize in hair evaluations, with facilities available in every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Hair screenings can examine substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer unique testing combinations.

Recently, hair follicle methods are increasingly preferred for drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction professionals favor hair testing over traditional urine checks. Hair tests are essential for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation cases. They have a longer detection period, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection, reducing cheating chances. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the structure of the developing hair fiber. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal approximately up to a 3-month period of drug and alcohol exposure. The collection process is straightforward, alteration is relatively challenging, and transportation is simple.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg for the specimen is given. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the hair sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the laboratory involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage for most specimens, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a lower concentration than in other techniques (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most arduous technique to execute.

Positive screenings are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when deemed necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO/IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It reveals a trend of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Variances such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
