Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Punta Gorda, Florida. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialty in hair testing is unparalleled, with a nationwide network of centers ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for specific testing needs.

The trend of using hair follicle drug tests for screening has notably increased. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor these tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are valued by organizations with strict drug policies, legal institutions, and probation departments. Their key advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, along with a secure sample collection process, making them difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drugs used within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair screening has become an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a historical record of alcohol and other substances, encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond ten panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional quantity of body hair may be acquired. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other hair varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes initial sample processing within the lab’s system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While it offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive result during Screening necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require further validation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before verification as deemed necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can monitor substance usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is significantly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Supplies usage history: Capable of illustrating a pattern of drug use over time, unlike assessments limited to immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to recognize recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair requires roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally carry higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle located under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing options, hair follicle testing excels over traditional urine tests. Superior Accuracy in hair testing significantly enhances detection reliability. In Punta Gorda, FL, choosing hair testing means opting for unprecedented detection levels not typically possible with urine tests.

Broader Substance Detection is another advantage of hair tests. It can identify varied substances effectively through a single sample, providing comprehensive screening.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window is a key advantage of hair follicle testing. Covering up to 90 days, it provides a detailed overview of an individual's drug history. In Punta Gorda, FL, this longer detection frame allows employers to have a comprehensive understanding of an employee or applicant's drug use over time, supporting better-informed hiring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Punta Gorda, FL, offers a Tamper-Resistant Method that significantly reduces adulteration risks. Unlike urine tests, the sample collection process is closely monitored, ensuring authentic results. The sturdiness of hair samples means altered or substituted samples are nearly impossible, providing unshakeable reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
