Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in North Miami Beach, FL. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with testing facilities located nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing solutions.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests over time has increased in drug testing methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer the hair drug test to the usual urine test. These tests suit employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and offenders on probation. A key strength of hair follicle tests is their extended detection time of up to 90 days, using an observatory collection process that's hard to tamper with. Still, urine tests remain optimal for recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have become recognized as a significant method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, it can present an approximate three-month detection timeframe for various substances. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, deemed an optimal sample size for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug screening result involves four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's database. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and dispatch, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custody framework.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for substance abuse indicators. It's a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug usage in most cases; however, a confirmed positive screen is required for legal proceedings. Samples with indicative positive results in this phase necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample display indicative positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or saliva tests), highlighting hair drug testing as the most intricate approach.

To affirm any positive screening result, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: Provides an overview of substance use patterns over elapsed time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug evaluations are more costly than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair shaft and not the follicle within the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
