Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Neptune Beach, Florida. Whether you're seeking a drug or alcohol test via hair, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this area. We boast a nationwide network of testing centers proficient in administering hair tests, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair. These tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for detecting substances. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is popular with zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation management, offering an extended detection window for substances—up to 90 days—and a supervised collection, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair strand retains biomarkers in its fiber, providing a comprehensive account of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, it can deliver a detection span of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial processing in a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples suggesting positivity in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If positivity is suggested in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating positivity undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: Offers a trajectory of drug use over a time frame, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
