Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Monticello, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide. Typically, hair measurements from 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body can be tested. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to suit specific testing needs.

Recently, the usage of hair follicle drug tests has increasingly become a preferred method. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance drug policies, probation conditions, and court requirements favor hair tests due to their extended detection duration of up to 90 days. While the process is observed and hard to manipulate, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair contains an extensive timeline of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When trimmed near the scalp, hair samples offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. This method is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair not be available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" covers other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for laboratory assessment of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial phase of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive with Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at a notably lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), signifying why hair drug screening is fundamentally challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a briefer detection window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite hard, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent usage: An approximate span of 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur more cost than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Monticello, FL, the effectiveness of hair follicle testing surpasses that of urine testing in several ways. Hair tests boast a superior detection accuracy, reliably identifying substances over an extended timeframe. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
