Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Miami Springs, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, supported by testing centers in every major city Nationwide ready to conduct a hair examination. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be collected. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing solutions.

Lately, the preference for drug testing methodologies has increasingly leaned toward hair follicle analyses. Numerous employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug evaluations rather than standard urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies concerning drug use, legal courts, and those on probation. A key advantage of hair tests is their extensive drug use detection span of up to 90 days, done under direct observation, making deception nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly considered an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains extended records of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. Samples taken near the scalp can offer a detection range of up to three months for substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the material is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale for exact specimen measurement. If head hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair might be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab handling of a drug analysis result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a specimen is initially incorporated into the lab’s system. This step involves making sure the specimen was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most specimens, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen shows a preliminary positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, substances are drawn from hair at lower concentrations than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests a challenging methodology.

Any Screening positive results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all suspected positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Yields historical information: It can reveal a drug use trend over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Substances become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
