Offering thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Lynn Haven, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider. If you're seeking hair drug or alcohol tests, we have you covered with testing centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has leaned towards hair follicle tests over traditional urine tests. Many companies, legal entities, and substance professionals now opt for this method due to its benefits. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary conditions prefer it. A notable advantage is its long detection window of up to 90 days, making it tough to tamper with, although urine tests are more reliable for usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures long-term substance usage data by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of the growing hair strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair testing can reveal substance use up to roughly a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal amount for analysis and verification. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid evaluation for drug presence. Even though Screening is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive result is necessary for court acceptability. Any samples initially testing positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

In cases where a Screening stage shows a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the sample and prepped for Extraction. This stage involves removing drugs from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other forms (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to perform.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used for confirming positive screening results. Preceding confirmation, any samples testing presumptive positive are washed as required. The procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is thoroughly reviewed conforming to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long-lasting detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter time frame of urine tests.
  • Resilient to tampering: The difficulty in gaming a hair drug test enhances the precision of results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It highlights a pattern of substance use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis concentrates on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Lynn Haven, FL
When comparing the benefits of hair follicle tests to traditional urine screenings, the former offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests provide an extensive assessment period, capturing substance use over three months, which urine tests cannot match.

Incorporating hair follicle testing into drug screening procedures presents a clear advantage. Employers benefit from more comprehensive data, reinforcing zero-tolerance policies with a method that offers an observed collection process, reducing potential cheating.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
