Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug exams in Brandon, Florida. Should you require a hair-based analysis for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in such assessments and operate centers nationwide capable of executing these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or elsewhere on the body is necessary. Tests include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prevalence in substance checks. This method is increasingly favored over standard urine tests by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts. Employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies and individuals on probation utilize it. A major advantage is its extended detection period up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, deterring cheating. Nevertheless, for detecting recent substance use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug use. It is straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Note that head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry required that is not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit drugs. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in the Screening process require additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo a washing process prior to confirmation if needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the standards set by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Compared to urine tests, hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, resulting in greater accuracy.
  • Historical usage insight: Offers a pattern of substance use over an extended period, unlike just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Generally more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and growth rates affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brandon, FL, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine analysis in multiple ways. First, it provides superior detection accuracy, capturing a wider range of substance use over an extended period of time. While urine tests can only detect recent drug use, hair tests reveal a larger history, increasing their reliability. This advantage is crucial for employers, providing them with a deeper understanding of an individual's substance habits.

Extended Detection Window

For employers in Brandon, FL, the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing is invaluable. This method can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a far-reaching view into an individual's substance history. Such comprehensive insights are beneficial in making informed decisions regarding hiring or employee retention, ensuring that workplace policies are upheld and enhancing the overall safety and reliability of the workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Brandon, FL, offer a tamper-resistant method for detecting substance use. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated, hair tests significantly reduce the risk of adulteration. The specimens are collected under supervision and processed with integrity, providing reliable results. This ensures that the findings are trustworthy, making it a preferred choice for organizations that demand certainty and accuracy in their testing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
