Accredited Drug Testing ensures comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Auburndale, Florida. For hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair evaluations extends far and wide, with numerous testing centers from coast to coast ready to carry out these tests. For most analyses, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other personalized hair testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of the standard drug testing processes. Organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. This testing method benefits employers adhering to strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation programs by providing a longer detection timeline of up to 90 days, collected under observation, thus minimizing the possibility of tampering. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests hold the lead for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug consumption. When the hair is gathered from near the scalp, it provides an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp area yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

Laboratory analysis of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes its initial processing into a laboratory's system, which involves verifying proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to check for drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a more challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. As needed, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to evade: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost implications: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing sets higher benchmarks against traditional urine tests in Auburndale, FL. Hair tests successfully surpass in accuracy and dependability, offering a broader window for detecting substance use. With a less invasive procedure, these tests provide a foolproof advantage over standard urine tests.

The sophisticated analysis of hair samples captures a detailed account, leaving little chance for bypassing detection. This potent alternative is invaluable for precise drug testing needs, highlighting its superiority over urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
