Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Salida, Colorado. Our expertise lies in hair tests, and we have facilities nationwide equipped to carry out these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be utilized. These tests are adaptable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other substances.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has surged among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, gradually replacing traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies often mandate hair drug tests. This method offers a longer detection window of up to 90 days, is difficult to tamper with, and is collected under supervision. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting very recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the elongating hair strand. When gathered next to the scalp, hair can extend up to a roughly 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, comparatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical option for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be considered in court. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptively positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to conduct.

Verification of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historic usage evidence: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs need roughly 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically have higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability of outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
