Urine| Hair Follicle | Oral Fluid | Blood | ETG
Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by holding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to mail.
A 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair covers all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning consists of initially processing a specimen into the lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was securely sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional required data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.
Screening entails a preliminary fast assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening cost-effectively eliminates drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs validation to hold up in court. Any sample showing presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo secondary verification.
A sample showing potential positivity in Screening requires more hair from the initial sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are removed from hair at much fewer concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology to conduct.
GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods verify any positive screening outcomes during Confirmation. Samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before verification if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Drawbacks:
Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test actually evaluates the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.
