Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Durango, Colorado. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing provides specialized hair testing services and has facilities in every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is necessary. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent years, there has been an increasing preference for hair follicle drug tests in drug screening protocols. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, and being almost impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sourced from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drug traces. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch batch consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If head hair is unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps included in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs frequently abused. While Screening is an economical option to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be valid legally. Samples flagged as presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, further hair is taken from the main sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from the hair at far lower levels than alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting why hair screening is inherently complex.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before any confirmation is done. The entire lab process encompasses Accessioning through to Confirmation and is audited under the guidelines of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a narrower detection window.
  • Limited opportunity for tampering: Manipulating hair drug tests is notably challenging, therefore enhancing the precision of outcomes.
  • Chronicles usage patterns: It provides a historical chart of drug usage spanning a timeline, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of indicating recent ingestion: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome fluctuations: Variables like hair color and personal growth rate can influence drug metabolite amounts in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand, not the follicle itself beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers several advantages in Durango, CO. The superior detection accuracy and reliability of hair tests are evident in their extended detection window, which covers a more extended period of substance use. Hair testing reduces the risk of sample tampering and provides an in-depth analysis.

Additionally, hair follicle testing's resistance to adulteration and substitution makes it a more trustworthy option. Employers benefit from having a clearer understanding of an employee's drug use, leading to better-informed employment decisions that support workplace safety and policy compliance.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Durango, CO, is its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days of drug use history. This provides a thorough examination of an individual’s substance use over time, significantly exceeding the detection capabilities of traditional urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
