Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Broomfield, Colorado. For those needing either a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities nationwide capable of administering these tests. Hair of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required from the crown or body. Analyzing hair can unveil drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method for detecting substance use. Many organizations, courts, and addiction specialists now favor it over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation cases rely on hair follicle tests due to their extended detection capability, observing drug use up to 90 days, making them hard to tamper with. Urine tests remain superior for detecting drugs taken in the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository of long-term exposure to alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When collected directly from the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch specimen consisting of about 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield a 100mg sample, which is ideal for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or expanded panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the sample's initial incorporation into the laboratory’s system. This step verifies correct sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not already covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial, less comprehensive evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to detect drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Samples with a presumptive positive outcome from Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further analysis during Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug analysis particularly complex.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use over a 90-day period, surpassing urine tests' shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: These tests provide an overview of drug use patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigment and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine testing in Broomfield, CO, hair testing emerges superior in several ways.
Hair tests offer a broader detection window, capturing drug use history over 90 days. This far surpasses the limited timeframe of urine tests, ensuring more comprehensive insights. Such enhanced accuracy aids employers and legal entities in making informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
