At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Basalt, Colorado. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, with facilities in all cities that perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for substance detection. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The key advantage of a hair test is its extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, with a closely supervised collection process, making it nearly foolproof. Conversely, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history of drug intake by trapping biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol use within an approximate 3-month period. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment, close to the scalp, with about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil), will give 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and verification. For EtG, additional checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair indicates any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is cost-effective and generally rules out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening must go through another confirmation step.

Should a sample appear positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleaned if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, a longer span than urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is very tough, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological data: The test can show drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Price: Generally, hair tests are costlier than other drug-testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp, often leading to the misnomer "hair follicle tests".

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Basalt, CO, reveals a clear advantage. Hair tests offer superior detectability and reliability. It allows for a comprehensive understanding of a person's drug use history, offering up to 90 days of detection. This surpasses the shorter detection windows that urine tests provide.

Moreover, hair testing offers a more accurate snapshot of low-level drug use, minimizing the chances of false negatives. Employers find great value in this precision, ensuring that their workforce adheres to company policies without compromise.

Extended Detection Window

One major benefit of hair follicle testing in Basalt, CO, is its extended detection period, which spans up to 90 days. This capability provides employers with a complete picture of an individual's substance use over time. Such comprehensive insight is vital for making informed employment decisions.

In addition to extended detection windows, hair tests can uncover patterns of misuse, offering more than what short-term tests can reveal. It's an enduring solution for employers who demand thoroughness in their drug testing approach.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Basalt, CO, hair follicle tests provide a significant reduction in the risk of sample manipulation. Such tests are known for being highly tamper-resistant, offering reliable results that are difficult to challenge. This is a key advantage over urine tests, which are easier to adulterate.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
