Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in the city of Aurora, Colorado. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments with centers across various cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair testing is applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized assessments.

In the past few years, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more common for drug screenings. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance misuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine analyses. Hair follicle drug tests cater to employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. A notable advantage is that hair testing offers an extended detection timeline, usually up to 90 days, and involves an observed collection process, making it exceptionally hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the preferred option for recent drug usage detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a significant tool in drug and alcohol detection, hair testing provides an extended history by encapsulating biomarkers within growing hair strand fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair’s collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to adulteration, and convenient to ship.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (about as thick as a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests and panels above 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair; "body hair" covers all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Summary

Laboratory processing of drug test results includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. It encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. Though Screening effectively eliminates drug use in most cases, positive results must be confirmed to hold up in court. Any samples testing positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When a Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), marking hair drug testing as a challenging technique.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical usage data: Reflects a drug use pattern over time, not just immediate usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect very recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
