Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Selma, California. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, they are experts in hair testing with facilities across all cities in the nation capable of performing such tests. It requires having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, which is generally used. Hair evaluations can be conducted for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for conducting drug screenings. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are mandated by employers with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their significantly longer detection window for drug use, extending up to 90 days, obtained in an observed manner, making deception nearly impossible. Yet, for screening drug intake within the past 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal usage patterns for up to around a 3-month period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We endorse using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a corresponding amount of body hair might be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (beard, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the lab analysis of a drug testing sample include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample in a laboratory's system. It involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening addresses a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that yield a presumptive positive on Screening need a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations than through other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed pre-confirmation as required. Each phase of the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides longitudinal data: It can exhibit a trend of drug usage over a length of time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term “hair follicle tests” is a misnomer; the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
