Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Santa Fe Springs, California. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we're experts in this field, offering services at locations across the nation. You typically need 1.5-2 inches of scalp or body hair for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing procedures. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for this over the standard urine test. It's favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies and the judicial system. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, along with being collected during an observed process, making deception nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of these substances by locking biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. Hair taken close to the scalp can indicate drug and alcohol use for a period of up to 3 months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Securing a 1.5-inch sample containing around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair—optimal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be harvested. By 'head hair,' we mean only scalp hair; 'body hair' denotes all other hair variants (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results involves four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates with integrating the sample into a laboratory’s system. This process confirms the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not recorded electronically in a chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Though cost-efficient to eliminate drug consumption in many samples, a positive result in Screening mandates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumed positive results in Screening must undergo additional verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is drawn from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing quite challenging.

A positive Screening result is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of positive samples occurs before Confirmation. The complete laboratory sequence—from Accessioning to Confirmation—receives scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection span: Hair drug analysis can trace drug activity back up to 90 days, which is longer than urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is nearly impossible, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Chronicles historical usage: It reveals drug consumption patterns over months, as opposed to recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Recent consumption undetectable: A minimum of 5-7 days is required for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Higher expense: Typically, hair drug screenings cost more than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair characteristics and personal growth differences might impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the evaluation targets the strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
