Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in San Luis Obispo, California. Whether your requirement is for a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair analysis with facilities across all major cities in the U.S. capable of conducting such tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from your scalp or body, for assessment. Hair samples can be tailored for analyzing various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

Recently, more often, drug testing has included a hair follicle approach. This method is favored by employers, judicial bodies, and addiction counselors over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free mandates, legal entities, and probation officers increasingly resort to hair follicle analysis. Its standout advantage is a duration of detection extending to about 90 days, observed while collected, and nearly cheat-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests still excel in detecting recent drug use within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal usage over nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is an optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" is exclusively used to refer to scalp hair. "Body hair" pertains to all other hair types (including facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in processing a drug test in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any additional data not captured by electronic systems is inputted.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is economical for dismissing drug use on most samples, a positive result requires verification for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation step.

For samples that test as presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much smaller concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair analysis the most intricate to conduct.

Verification of any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more dependable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing traditional urine tests and hair follicle testing in San Luis Obispo, CA, hair testing proves superior due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests detect a longer history of substance use, offering better insight into an individual’s drug habits.

Employers and legal authorities prefer hair testing because it offers detailed insights, which are invaluable for making informed decisions, unlike the shorter-range analysis urine tests provide.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection range of hair follicle testing in San Luis Obispo, CA, makes it highly effective. This method can unveil drug use spanning up to 90 days, providing comprehensive insights into an individual’s drug history.

For employers, this extended window is crucial. It ensures a detailed view of a prospective or current employee's substance use, fostering a transparent and informed hiring process in the competitive job market of San Luis Obispo.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
