Process Overview
The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a sample within a lab’s system. This step verifies that the specimen is properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not furnish.
Screening provides an early assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug usage from most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples testing positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.
If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for use in Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair in much lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.
Confirmation for any Screening positives is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
