Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Pittsburg, CA. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, including numerous city centers capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary for most applications. Our hair analyses can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening. With a preference over the conventional urine test, employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often opt for hair tests. Especially suited for zero-tolerance policies, court requirements, and probation situations, hair follicle tests benefit from an extended detection duration, approximately 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making them highly tamper-resistant. However, urine tests remain most accurate for substance use within a recent 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is regarded as an effective mechanism for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the developing strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair demonstrates roughly a three-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

Acquiring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (matching a #2 pencil’s diameter) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We propose weighing the sample on a jewelry scale. Where scalp hair is unavailable, an identical amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" signifies scalp hair exclusively. "Body hair" encompasses all other variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of key steps in processing a drug test laboratory result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on the initial laboratory intake of a sample. This process ensures the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary examination for substance misuse. While Screening remains cost-effective for excluding drug presence in most samples, any positive results necessitate confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening mandate subsequent verification.

When screened samples indicate presumptive positivity, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at substantially lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screens are the most complex to execute.

Confirming all positive Screening outcomes employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo preemptive washing, if necessary. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug analysis can reveal substance use up to 90 days ahead, in contrast to the shorter detection scope of urine exams.
  • Hindrance to deception: Hair drug tests are exceedingly difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides past use data: It can display a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be pricier than other testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair hue and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", this analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
