Based in Perris, CA, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, and we operate testing sites across the nation to facilitate hair tests. Standard practice requires hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head, or body hair may be used for testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has leaned more towards hair follicle analysis. It is becoming standard for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over the typical urine analysis. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services rely on the hair follicle drug test because it offers a longer detection period of up to 90 days, is less vulnerable to cheating, and involves observed collection. Nonetheless, for very recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests retain the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an identical quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory analysis of a drug test sample involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's database. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, generates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid analysis for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage on most specimens, a positive finding must be validated to hold in legal settings. Any specimens that produce a presumptive positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

In the event a specimen is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (i.e., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most rigorous methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is undertaken through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptive for positivity undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes inspection under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses have a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can disclose drug use patterns over a duration, rather than solely current use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine analyses in Perris, CA, the former emerges as superior regarding detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests capture a more extended drug use history, providing clearer insights into a person's substance habits.

The detailed methods of hair testing minimize error margins, offering peace of mind to employers and authorities. While urine tests serve specific time frames, hair follicle tests present a vast detection window, ensuring comprehensive substance use analysis.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Perris, CA effectively uncovers drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This extensive detection capability offers employers a thorough perspective regarding the substance use patterns of employees or applicants, ensuring an informed decision-making process.

This prolonged window provided by hair tests far exceeds the capabilities of traditional methods, helping highlight persistent drug use behaviors that might not be evident in shorter-term tests, such as urine.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Perris, CA, safeguarding against sample tampering is crucial, and hair follicle tests excel in this. Their collection process is difficult to manipulate, ensuring reliable outcomes. Choosing this method minimizes the potential for dishonest submissions or modifications, which enhances trust in the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
