Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Palm Springs, California. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert, with centers nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body for the test. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for conducting drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for this over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals serving probation. A key advantage is their much longer detection window for drug usage, typically up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise test.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by incorporating biomarkers into the growing hair fibers. When obtained from near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances of abuse. While it is an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results require confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screens is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It offers a record of drug activity over a period, not just recent behavior.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days before they are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: These tests are sometimes called "hair follicle tests", though they actually examine the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Palm Springs, CA, clearly surpasses urine testing methods. With a longer detection window, hair tests reveal drug usage over an extended period, unlike the limited scope of urine tests. This superior detection capability offers a more reliable assessment.

Employers seeking accurate results often choose hair testing over tradition. It provides comprehensive reliability, ensuring usage over 90 days without the pitfalls associated with urine testing. Hair testing is an excellent choice for precise detection.

Extended Detection Window

One of the compelling aspects of hair follicle testing in Palm Springs, CA, is its extended detection window. It effectively captures drug use history for up to 90 days, giving employers detailed insight into an individual’s substance history, unlike shorter-term urine tests.

This method offers employers a comprehensive view, allowing them to make informed decisions. Such an extended detection period helps organizations maintain an accurate record of their employees’ substance use over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Palm Springs, CA, is a tamper-resistant method. It significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration, thus ensuring trustworthy and unquestionable results. This reliability is crucial for maintaining integrity in substance testing.

Unlike urine tests, hair tests are less susceptible to tampering, which provides a strong level of assurance for those who depend on accurate and secure testing outcomes. This testing method is often regarded as one of the most tamper-proof options available.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
