Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Murrieta, California. Those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test can rely on Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair testing. With collection centers nationwide, performing a hair test is convenient. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body are used for this analysis. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle testing methods. A growing number of employers, judicial institutions, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation frequently use hair follicle tests. The standout advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, involving an observed collection process that makes tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for screening recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a substantial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing markers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and substances. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We recommend employing a jeweler’s scale for weighting the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. In reference to head hair, this implies only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. This involves ascertaining that the sample was securely sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to discount drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen requires validation to be legally acceptable. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a positive result is implied during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During this process, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo a cleansing prior to confirmation, as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can trace drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine analyses which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resilient to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is remarkably challenging, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternative drug screening methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
