Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Los Banos, California. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with facilities nationwide equipped for hair analyses. Generally, hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body are sufficient. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored screening options.

The preference for using hair follicle drug tests in recent years has increased. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for these over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored where zero-tolerance drug policies are enforced. The key advantage of these tests is their extended detection range, which can cover up to 90 days, making them nearly foolproof. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days due to their precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for a duration of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, minimally susceptible to tampering, and easily transportable.

An ideal test sample consists of a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp, providing 100mg of hair for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When we refer to head hair, we're specifically talking about scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other forms of hair like facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary additional data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for illegal drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result from it needs to be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples that test positive in Screening demand a further confirmation step.

Should a sample record a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lighter concentrations when compared to other test methods (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining why hair testing is among the most complex methodologies.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It's challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more trustworthy results.
  • Offers historical insight: Hair tests reveal a timeline of drug usage, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs require around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
