Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests for drugs in Gardena, CA. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair testing and have centers nationwide for your convenience. Generally, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Various entities like employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often use hair tests due to their longer detection period, usually up to 90 days. The tests are conducted under observation and are hard to manipulate, but urine tests remain the most effective for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is gaining recognition as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The strands capture indicators within the forming fibers, offering a prolonged chronicle of substance and alcohol intake. When collected near the scalp, the hair can reflect drug and alcohol use over a duration of roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and verification. For EtG enhancements, as well as for examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is recommended to assess the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be insufficient, an equal quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in labs includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within the lab’s system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional necessary data entry tasks not managed by an electronic custody system.

Screening comprises an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical approach to exclude substance usage in the majority of tests, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation for court acceptability. Specimens that yield presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this process, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive findings are washed prior to Confirmation when necessary. The complete procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited per ISO/IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal substance usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to evade: Evading a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers usage patterns: It reveals a timeline of substance use over time, not merely the most recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: Detection of substances in hair requires approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative testing procedures.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
