Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis in Burney, California. If you require a screening for drugs or alcohol through hair testing, we're experts in this field and have facilities across nationwide cities for conducting these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, usually from the crown or body, is necessary. Hair analysis can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method for substance screening. Increasingly, employers, legal systems, and substance abuse advisors mandate this test instead of urine analysis. Employed by firms with strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and probationary supervisors, hair testing offers a detection advantage of up to 90 days with an observed process, making it almost foolproof. Yet, for recent drug usage in past five days, urine tests stay more precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent means for uncovering substance use, hair testing offers an extended record of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reflect a timeline of up to roughly three months for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, tough to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, deemed optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or comprehensive tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This process involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to detect drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be verified to stand in judicial settings. Samples identified as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is completed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, yielding highly reliable results.
  • Reveals historical trends: This test outlines a pattern of substance use over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolites’ concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
