Accredited Drug Testing offers precise hair follicle drug assessments in Texarkana, Arkansas. Whether seeking a drug or alcohol analysis via hair, our centers nationwide stand ready. Hair samples typically require 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained traction in drug testing, surpassing traditional urine tests. Many entities, including employers and courts, opt for this method. With its longer detection span—up to 90 days—and secure, observed collection process, it's nearly cheat-proof. However, when scrutinizing recent substance use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a notable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a detailed, historical record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair can provide a retrospective detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is an optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically imply scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The principal four stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the foundational handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This process incorporates confirming the sample's sealing and correct shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenges to falsification: Falsifying a hair drug test is notably difficult, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Presents historical consumption data: It sheds light on drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Texarkana, AR, the choice of hair follicle testing is often preferred over urine tests. Hair testing provides superior detection accuracy and reliability, giving a clearer picture of an individual’s substance use history over time. Unlike urine tests, which have limited detection windows, hair tests identify drug usage over a prolonged period.

Hair follicle testing boasts a longer detection period, which typically spans up to 90 days, compared to the much shorter window of urine tests. This extended timeframe allows employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance habits, beyond the recent history that urine testing offers.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Texarkana, AR is its extended detection window, stretching up to 90 days. This aspect provides employers with a comprehensive view of a candidate or employee’s substance use, capturing a wider timeframe than traditional methods.

An extended detection period means hair follicle tests can uncover substance use habits that occurred months prior, offering a detailed history of an individual’s lifestyle. This is vital for employers seeking to maintain drug-free workplace environments, giving them a substantial overview of any potential substance issues.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests greatly reduce tampering concerns in Texarkana, AR. The method's design makes it difficult to adulterate or tamper with the results, ensuring the integrity of the collected samples. This reliability is crucial for employers who require unquestionable outcomes from drug testing processes.

Unlike traditional testing approaches, the observed collection process of hair follicle testing considerably minimizes the risk of sample adulteration. This method guarantees reliable results by maintaining stringent controls, making it a trusted choice for organizations committed to fair and genuine assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
