Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Plainview, Arkansas. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we maintain testing centers nationwide in every city. Typically, individuals need to have hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on their head or body. Our hair tests can assess drug and alcohol/ETG presence or provide other customized testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a superior method for drug testing in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests due to their accuracy over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation services, utilize this method. The advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests still offer precise results for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a comprehensive history of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair analysis can reveal drug or alcohol presence for up to three months. Collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and transport-friendly.

A 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 strands—around the thickness of a #2 pencil—yields 100mg, which is perfect for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or panels over 10, 150mg is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" exclusively means scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring correct sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. It's an economical way to exclude drug usage in most cases, though a positive result needs confirmation for legal validity. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing one of the toughest methodologies to execute.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked presumptively positive are thoroughly cleaned before confirmation, if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, exceeding the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair testing is notably difficult to compromise, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of substance use, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and growth rate differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
