Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Formosa, Arkansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing, with testing facilities located in all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is needed. Hair testing allows the analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, utilizing a hair follicle drug test for drug screening has grown more common. A number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance substance use policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection duration for drug use, generally up to 90 days, gathered through an observed collection, rendering it nearly foolproof against tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain optimal in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline, capturing evidence of alcohol and drug use within the structure of the developing hair fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair provides a detection window extending up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both primary screening and further confirmation. For EtG tests, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other body hair types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for processing a drug test result consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, including ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that wasn't supplied by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs. Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate potential drug use in most samples, however, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any sample testing positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is prepared from the initial sample for Extraction. This process extracts drugs at a much finer concentration from hair compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is done through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It delivers a timeline of drug usage over months, as opposed to just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative screening methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests," the test targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
