Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Clarksville, Arkansas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing with centers nationwide to facilitate this. You'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing in most scenarios. Hair samples can be analyzed for drug and alcohol/ETG use, as well as other custom options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent recently compared to traditional methods. Employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse professionals are now more commonly opting for hair drug tests rather than urine tests. Hair tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days, enhancing the reliability of the results. However, for testing drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair assays have emerged as a compelling method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged archive of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can yield a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp area, will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This process ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Though Screening efficiently rules out drug usage for most samples at a lower cost, a positive finding needs to be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples displaying a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further validation.

Samples presumed positive during the Screening phase undergo additional preparation for Extraction by isolating more hair from the original specimen. This stage focuses on extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
