Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Sun City, Arizona. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field and operates testing centers across the nation that can conduct such tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body suffices in most instances. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in recent years for drug detection purposes. Increasingly, employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are favoring hair tests over traditional urine analysis. These tests are preferred by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation programs. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, which can reach up to 90 days and is nearly foolproof. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a comprehensive timeline for alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for approximately three months. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional substances, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not accessible, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of processing a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Although it’s a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use from most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

For samples testing positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than from other mediums (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests provide a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical use indication: It offers a record of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can alter the level of drug metabolites detected in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
