Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Green Valley, Arizona. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities in every city nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair exams can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated the hair follicle drug test. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair testing over the standard urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on hair tests. Their significant advantage includes an extended detection window, up to 90 days, carried out under observation, making it highly tamper-resistant. For recent usage within 5 days, urine tests are still more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair has the ability to capture a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers during growth. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to about three months. The simplicity in collecting hair, its resistance to tampering, and the ease of transport make it an appealing option.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp, will yield 100 mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For testing including EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150 mg is suggested. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen weight. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. ‘Head hair’ specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results entails four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially integrating a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step verifies that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any further data entry not encompassed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be accepted in legal settings. Samples that show tentative positive results during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

In instances where a sample shows tentative positive results during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This process involves extracting drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methodologies (including urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing presents the greatest challenge in terms of methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, it is necessary to wash all presumptive positive samples as required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Compared to urine tests, hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Challenges in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in enhanced accuracy of findings.
  • Supplies past usage data: It can outline drug use trends over a prolonged period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result disparities: Variability in hair color and individual rates of hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Surpasses Urine Testing in Green Valley, AZ

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
