Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments right here in Flagstaff, Arizona. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these evaluations and provides testing facilities across all U.S. cities, capable of executing hair examinations. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is necessary, which can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair analysis choices.

Recently, the inclination to use a hair follicle drug analysis has grown. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts have shifted towards hair tests as opposed to standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are employed by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal courts, and individuals under probation. The core advantage of a hair follicle drug examination is its extended detection window, which can trace drug usage up to 90 days, undergoes a monitored sample collection process, and is extremely tough to falsify. Yet, urine tests are still the most precise for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis offers a substantial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a protracted timeline of substance use by preserving biomarkers within a growing hair strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window extending to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch piece with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial and confirmatory testing. For testing EtG or more comprehensive panels exceeding 10, 150mg is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug testing result encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample intake into a lab’s system, which includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any lacking data not furnished by an electronic custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary scan for substance abuse. Though Screening is economically efficient for excluding drug usage in most specimens, a positive finding necessitates confirmation for forensic use. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be initially positive during Screening, additional hairs are extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction, where drugs are derived from hair in much smaller concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating the intricacy of hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive outcomes from screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirming as necessary. The lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It evidences a trend of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variances: Factors like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
