In St. Florian, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Should you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair testing with centers situated in numerous cities nationwide to facilitate such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Tests analyze for drugs, ETG/alcohol, and other tailored options.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity over the years. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer it over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict compliance policies, courts, and probationers regularly employ hair tests. Their principal advantage is a prolonged detection window, catching drug traces up to 90 days afterward, observed in a monitored collection, making tampering exceedingly difficult. However, the urine test remains the best method for recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers into the fibers of the expanding strand. When taken near the scalp, it offers nearly a 3-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. Collecting it is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and it's convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be substituted. Scalp hair specifically refers to head hair, whereas body hair encompasses other hair categories (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test entails four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where the sample enters a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and records any data absent from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the preliminary rapid test for detecting drug abuse. It's an economical means to dismiss drug usage for most samples; however, a positive result must be authenticated to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, an additional batch of hair is retrieved from the primary sample for Extraction. This process involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most intricate methodology.

Positive screen results move to Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests reveal drug consumption history spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with limited periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is challenging, thereby ensuring dependable results.
  • Chronological data: Offers insight into drug use patterns over time, beyond recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically exceed the cost of alternate drug-testing methods.
  • Result variation: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair may vary due to factors like hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: The procedure sometimes termed as "hair follicle tests" actually evaluates the hair strand, not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
