Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Selma, Alabama. If you require a hair or alcohol test, we are specialists in this field, with testing sites available nationwide, ready to administer hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair testing covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of the drug testing approach. Many employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Employers, especially those with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation utilize hair follicle tests. The central advantage of this method is its extended drug detection window, spanning up to 90 days, with observation during collection, and its resistance to tampering. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair can record extended drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, it's quite tamper-resistant, and it is hassle-free to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of about 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the area closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale, it's wise to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the primary processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. It entails verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening economically rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If the Screening stage shows a presumptively positive result, more hair is drawn from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid tests, which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging to execute.

For any positive screening outcomes, Confirmation is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized using both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to alter: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It tracks a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage not detectable: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Price: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Drug metabolite concentrations in the hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
