Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Penton, Alabama. If you require a drug or alcohol screening, our specialty in hair testing extends nationwide, providing centers in every city ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices for most cases. Hair tests are versatile, allowing for drug detection, alcohol/ETG tests, or other tailored testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method in drug screening. A growing number of employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists favor hair tests over urine tests. Employing organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers increasingly rely on them. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection range, often reaching up to 90 days, under a monitored collection process, making deception virtually impossible. While for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly gained recognition as an effective tool to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a detailed timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from the area near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only. "Body hair" denotes all other forms (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial logging of a sample into a lab system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening effectively rules out drug consumption in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is crucial for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows preliminary positive results in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing remains the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screen result employs methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with preliminary positive results are cleansed before Confirmation if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a trend of drug consumption over time, versus only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Divergence in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicles under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Penton, AL, hair follicle tests offer several benefits over traditional urine tests. Their extended detection capability captures a broader history of drug use, offering more reliable insights. While urine tests may detect recent use, hair tests provide superior accuracy and are much less prone to deceit, making them the preferred choice for rigorous screening.

Extended Detection Window

With the ability to detect drug use up to 90 days prior, hair follicle tests in Penton, AL, offer a significant advantage. This wide detection window gives employers a thorough overview of an applicant's or employee’s substance use history, allowing for more informed decision-making in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
