In Oneonta, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialization in hair tests is unparalleled, with Nationwide centers ready to assist. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is necessary. These tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specific hair analysis choices.

The trend towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests has increased in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer these tests over the traditional urine screening. Hair drug tests are favored by those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary cases. They offer a unique advantage of detecting drug use over a much longer period, up to 90 days, under close supervision, making cheating almost impossible. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The detection of drug and alcohol use has been significantly enhanced by hair testing. Hair captures biomarkers, providing a long-term record of substance use within its strands as they grow. Hair samples taken close to the scalp offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands near the scalp yields 100mg, an ideal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for measuring is suggested. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When we talk about head hair, it exclusively means scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of achieving a result in a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial step of integrating a specimen into the laboratory's system, verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that the electronic chain of custody has not provided.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for substances of abuse. Although it's a cost-effective way to exclude drug presence in most samples, a confirmed positive result is essential for legal admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive in this stage require further confirmation.

If Screening shows presumptive positivity, additional hair is prepared for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), labeling hair testing as the most complex to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screen is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all tentatively positive samples are washed where necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests capture drug use up to 90 days, contrary to shorter-detection urine tests.
  • Challenge to deceive: High difficulty in falsifying hair test results ensures greater accuracy.
  • Prolonged drug use record: Offers insight into usage patterns over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become apparent in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair testing is generally pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the detected drug metabolite levels.

Note: Despite the common term “hair follicle tests”, the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
