Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hamilton, Alabama. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our experts specialize in these assessments, with centers available in cities nationwide. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is typically required for testing. Our hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized based on specific testing needs.

In recent years, conducting hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers rely on hair follicle tests. The key advantage is the longer detection window, up to 90 days, conducted under observation and challenging to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests maintain better precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the samples are challenging to adulterate, and they are easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising about 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the sample's sealing and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplements any missing information that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for the presence of drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why conducting hair drug screening is more complex.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window of detection.
  • Challenging to cheat: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical insights: It can illustrate drug use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Fluctuations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself focuses on the hair strand and not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
