Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug testing in Fairhope, Alabama. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and offer testing locations in all cities throughout the nation capable of performing a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has increased. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer these to conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation often rely on hair follicle testing. The key advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, in a monitored setting, making it hard to falsify. Meanwhile, traditional urine tests remain the most effective for identifying drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as an efficient method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers as it grows, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, tampering with it is relatively challenging, and shipping it is straightforward.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid assessment for drug abuse. While screening efficiently eliminates drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive result must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Any sample that tests positive in screening requires an additional confirmation.

If a screening indicates a positive result, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive results receive washing prior to confirmation as required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests offer the ability to detect drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Minimal chance of tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to interfere with, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: Provides an overview of drug use patterns over a time span, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: In comparison to other drug testing techniques, hair drug tests are typically costlier.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
